An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the month's conclusion surged in the period preceding former President Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
